Now that the hangover from New Year’s has lifted into the ominous arrival of our resolutions needing action and not mere dreaming, I figured this would be a timely subject to flirt with. I had briefly responded to a question from a subscriber regarding New Year’s resolutions during the monthly Q&A session. Did it make sense to take this time of year seriously? As a brief interlude between then and tomorrow, was it finally now the right time to resurrect old dreams, install new ideals into power over us, or break and cleave the weak and futile from our environment? By itself, the transition from one year to another is an arbitrary passing. December 31st and January 1st are essentially the same day. The weather is cold and drifting, as if the world is immersed in an existential slumber, and the cars carrying their passengers move through the drift of the snow, wondering whether it was worth leaving the house at all. It seems that if we want to look towards actual transitory moments, time periods of change, transformation, and so on, seasonal changes would be much more resonant, if not have an inherent meaning to them.
